PROJECT TITLE:

Quantum computing and quantum algorithms.

PROJECT SUMMARY. Description of activities and objectives:

In this project the student will learn the foundations of quantum information and quantum computing, starting from a basic description of quantum mechanics all the way to the development and testing of small-scale quantum algorithms in the IBM Q computer. The work program will consist on:

(i) Study of fundamentals in quantum physics and quantum mechanics.
(ii) Introduction to quantum information: qubits, gates, algorithms
(iii) Implementation of simple algorithms using IBM Qiskit (Python). This includes small factoring algorithms, quantum search and quantum optimization.
(iv) Testing of algorithms in a real-world quantum computer. Study and benchmark of the computer’s performance.
(v) Practical study of those algorithms in real-world problems. This includes choosing a problem that fits the studied algorithms, developing a proper encoding, developing a state- of-the-art classical solution and comparison with its performance and scaling in the IBM Q machine.

The student will benefit from continuous interaction with a vibrant and young research group working on related topics, including 3 staff members, 4 postdoctoral researchers and 3-4 master and undergraduate students every year.
