PROJECT TITLE:

Design of micro-perforated meta-materials for the reduction of low-frequency noise in the transportation industry.

PROJECT SUMMARY. Description of activities and objectives:

The land and air transportation industry are currently facing the challenge of design materials light and compact, and capable of reducing noise components in the low and middle frequency range (< 1 kHz) of the enviromental noise sources (i.e. micro-perforated liners for the reduction of engine jet noise). The general purpose of this stage is to work in the conception and implementation of an innovative methodology based on acoustic metamaterials. These materials can exceed known bounds on conventional material properties. A great potential of the acoustic metamaterial lies in that it can be readily modified to make honeycomb sandwiched structures which could potentially be simultaneously strong, lightweight, and sound-proof. In particular, in this work we will
concentrate in the design of a multi-layer partition composed of a set of perforated panels, with physical parameters that can be optimized depending on different cost functions.

The activities to be developed in this work will include: a theoretical modeling for the study of the acoustic propagation in the device material; a numerical study that may include analytical simulations or FEM with COMSOL multiphysics, depending on the capacities of the student, and the realization of the optimal device using 3D printing. The goal is to finish with a prototype of the acoustic metamaterial with a low cost and ready to be tested in laboratory conditions.
